Shopping on TaoBao

Start with a precise search

Search using the product type, model and dimensions you need. Chinese terms can help match Chinese listings, but translation can be ambiguous. For example, 钢化膜 is a useful starting term for a tempered-glass screen protector; add your exact phone model and check the listing’s compatibility.

Do not assume that an English listing costs more or that the cheapest result is equivalent. Search language is a way to find candidates, not a reliable measure of value. If an image-search feature is available, use it to find similar items and then compare the actual specifications.

Compare like with like

  • Check the selected variant: size, colour, material, quantity and accessories can change the price.
  • Read dimensions carefully. Translate unfamiliar terms and ask the seller when the description is unclear.
  • Compare the delivered total, including shipping and payment charges, rather than the headline item price.
  • For branded goods, assess the seller and product evidence. A familiar logo, marketplace badge or low price does not prove authenticity.

Use reviews thoughtfully

Look at recent reviews for the exact variant, including photos and recurring complaints. A high sales count or rating alone does not establish quality. Read what reviewers actually say about fit, durability and whether the item matches the description. Be cautious of reviews shaped by rewards.

Ask the seller before ordering

Use the listing’s official customer-service or messaging option, commonly labelled 客服. Ask a concrete question such as “Does this include the cable?” or “What is the packed box size?” Short sentences are easier to translate. Keep the answer in the platform conversation.

Cart and checkout vocabulary

  • 加入购物车 — add to cart.
  • 立即购买 — buy now.
  • 购物车 — shopping cart.
  • 结算 — proceed to checkout.
  • 宝贝评价 or 评论 — item reviews or comments.

The available wording and menus may change. Before confirming, review the seller, chosen variant, quantity, delivery address and shipping method. Save a copy of the listing and order details in case the listing changes.

Before you pay

Make sure the item can use the intended delivery route and that you understand the final cost. For an unfamiliar seller or product, consider the possible cost of a return as well as the purchase price.

This replaces historical purchase-card and referral instructions that were not verified as current. Before paying for a Taobao order Check the product variant, quantity, seller and delivery address. Confirm whether the displayed total includes international shipping. If you chose consolidation, check how you will pay the later warehouse charge.
