Introduction to Taobao (淘宝)

Editorial update: 5 October 2026. This independent guide is for Singapore readers learning how to shop on Taobao. It began in 2017; the article now explains the decisions to make before ordering, without treating old prices or app menus as current.

What is Taobao?

Taobao is an online marketplace with many individual sellers. A listing’s price, product choices, delivery eligibility and after-sales conditions need to be checked for the exact item. Buying from the marketplace is different from asking a separate shopping agent to purchase an item for you.

Buying yourself or using an agent

When you buy yourself, you select the listing, communicate with the seller and arrange payment and delivery. A buying agent can handle some of those tasks under its own service terms. A forwarding service is different again: it receives parcels and arranges onward shipping, but may not purchase the item.

The original article compared Taobao with ezbuy from my experiences at the time. It should not be read as proof that a particular agent is always slower or more expensive. Compare current quotes, fees, exchange rates, delivery and return handling for the same product.

A simple decision checklist

  • Product: can you confirm the exact model, size and included parts?
  • Seller: are there useful recent reviews and clear answers to your questions?
  • Delivery: is the item accepted on the route you want, and do you understand the cost?
  • Payment: which methods are offered, in what currency, and with what extra charges?
  • Problems: what happens if the item is damaged, incorrect or needs to be returned?

Work out the total cost

Compare the item price plus domestic delivery, international delivery, payment or conversion charges and applicable taxes. For an agent, include its service charges too. A cheap listing does not necessarily mean a cheap delivered purchase.

For example, two sellers may show the same item at different prices but include different quantities or accessories. Compare matching variants before comparing delivery quotes. An apparently cheaper item may be unsuitable if the carrier cannot accept it.

Getting started

  1. Use the official app or website and follow its current account-registration instructions.
  2. Search for a specific product and compare several listings.
  3. Check the variant, dimensions, reviews and seller’s answers.
  4. Confirm the delivery route and total cost before paying.
  5. Keep the listing, order and tracking records until the purchase is complete.

Menus and language options change. Translate unfamiliar text carefully, and do not guess when it concerns a product specification or a charge.

Payment Options in Taobao

This replaces historical purchase-card and referral instructions that were not verified as current. Before paying for a Taobao order Check the product variant, quantity, seller and delivery address. Confirm whether the displayed total includes international shipping. If you chose consolidation, check how you will pay the later warehouse charge.
