It began in 2017; the article now explains the decisions to make before ordering, without treating old prices or app menus as current. What is Taobao? Taobao is an online marketplace with many individual sellers. A listing’s price, product choices, delivery eligibility and after-sales conditions need to be checked for the exact item. Buying from the marketplace is different from asking a separate shopping agent to purchase an item for you. Buying yourself or using an agent When you buy yourself, you select the listing, communicate with the seller and arrange payment and delivery. A buying agent can handle some of those tasks under its own service terms. A forwarding service is different again: it receives parcels and arranges onward shipping, but may not purchase the item. Compare the total delivered cost A low listing price is only part of the cost. Compare the item price, domestic delivery, international shipping, payment or currency-conversion charges and any taxes shown at checkout. A discount is useful only if the final delivered total is lower. For example, an item costing S$12 with S$8 delivery costs S$20 before other charges. A similar S$16 item with S$3 delivery costs S$19. These are illustrative figures, not current Taobao rates. Coupons, coins and cashback Check whether store coupons or platform discounts apply to the exact product and variant in your cart. This replaces historical purchase-card and referral instructions that were not verified as current. Before paying for a Taobao order Check the product variant, quantity, seller and delivery address. Confirm whether the displayed total includes international shipping. If you chose consolidation, check how you will pay the later warehouse charge. Read the payment methods available for that particular transaction. A method accepted for the item may not be offered for another service. Check the currency, any platform surcharge and your card or wallet provider’s exchange and fee terms. Save the order confirmation and payment record. Three delivery approaches to compare Direct delivery: where offered, review the international delivery charge and whether it is included in the checkout total. Original screenshots are retained as historical examples, not a demonstration of the current app. Start with a precise search Search using the product type, model and dimensions you need. Chinese terms can help match Chinese listings, but translation can be ambiguous. For example, 钢化膜 is a useful starting term for a tempered-glass screen protector; add your exact phone model and check the listing’s compatibility. Do not assume that an English listing costs more or that the cheapest result is equivalent. Search language is a way to find candidates, not a reliable measure of value.
