Taobao Tips

Editorial update: 5 October 2026. This guide began with my shopping experiences in 2017. Promotions, account verification and app menus change; check the terms shown for your own order before paying.

Compare the total delivered cost

A low listing price is only part of the cost. Compare the item price, domestic delivery, international shipping, payment or currency-conversion charges and any taxes shown at checkout. A discount is useful only if the final delivered total is lower.

For example, an item costing S$12 with S$8 delivery costs S$20 before other charges. A similar S$16 item with S$3 delivery costs S$19. These are illustrative figures, not current Taobao rates.

Coupons, coins and cashback

Check whether store coupons or platform discounts apply to the exact product and variant in your cart. Minimum spending, expiry dates and exclusions matter. Coins (淘金币) and points offers vary; do not assume the old percentage discounts or step-count rewards described in the original guide still apply.

If you use ShopBack, read the current Taobao store terms and follow its tracking instructions before purchasing. Cashback may be excluded, rejected or delayed; treat it as a possible saving rather than guaranteed money. See ShopBack’s shopping instructions and tracking help. The old S$5 signup promise has been removed because it was not verified as current.

Keep reviews honest

Describe what you actually received, including faults. A seller offering money for a positive review is not evidence that a product is good. Do not let an incentive determine your rating or hide a problem from other buyers.

If an item is damaged or incorrect

  1. Keep the packaging and photograph the parcel, item and shipping label.
  2. Compare the item with the listing and selected variant. Record exactly what is wrong.
  3. Contact the seller through the order’s messaging tools and explain the issue clearly. Use short sentences if translation is needed.
  4. Check the refund or after-sales options and deadlines shown on the order. Keep the discussion and agreement on the platform.
  5. Before agreeing to a return, check the destination, shipping cost and who pays. A partial refund may be offered, but it is not guaranteed.

Do not mark an order as satisfactory merely to receive a reward. Never give a seller your account password, payment passcode or verification code.

Before your next order

  • Read recent reviews for the exact variant, rather than relying on the headline rating.
  • Confirm dimensions, quantity and included accessories.
  • Check whether the delivery route accepts the item.
  • Keep screenshots of the listing and order confirmation.
